Last October, we celebrated Black History Month under the theme “Standing Firm in Power and Pride.” The theme honours the leadership and influence of Black individuals who have shaped British society, while celebrating cultural identity and heritage with confidence.

Black History Month is vital both in society and in schools. It deepens understanding of history, promotes unity, and showcases the achievements of Black communities in arts, science, and public life. In our classrooms, it supports belonging and well-being, inspires ambition through role models, and fosters respect and empathy through dialogue.

This celebration reflects our school values. Ambition is encouraged by learning about trailblazers like Julie Felix (Dance), Dr Wangari Maathai (Science) and Timothy Armoo (Business Studies) who overcame challenges to make a difference. Kindness is shown through stories of compassion and collective action such as the work of Bernadine Evaristo and Professor Jacqueline Dunkley respectively. Respect is at the heart of recognising diverse contributions and valuing every individual.

Black History Month invites us all to celebrate with purpose—standing firm together with ambition, kindness, and respect. Throughout October, we will hosted assemblies, worked on displays, and took part in curriculum activities that explore resilience, identity, and aspiration, some examples of which are featured below.
