Year 7 - The Story of English 

The Story of English delves into the history of stories, starting with the oldest tale in the English language – Beowulf – and covering the topics below: 

Narrative Fiction – An exploration of what makes a story from the earliest oral traditions right to the modern day. 

A Christmas Carol – Charles Dickens’ classic Victorian ghost story set on Christmas eve… 

Heroes and Villains – A look at heroes and villains in both fiction and non-fiction, from old myths to modern newspapers. 

Narrative poetry – year seven will learn about British poets have used their form to tell stories. 

A Monster Calls – Patrick Ness’ Carnegie Medal winning novel about a young boy who is visited late at night by a monster. 

Shakespeare – A journey through some of Shakespeare’s most famous stories including comedies, histories and tragedies.

Year 8 – The Power of English 

The Power of English builds upon students’ knowledge of English including the way in which our language is used to persuade, influence and provoke - covering the topics below: 

Up for Debate! – Pupils learn the rules and skills of formal debate competitions and how to apply them to the real world. 

Animal Farm – George Orwell’s vivid tale of a group of animals who overthrow a tyrannical farmer, Mr Jones… 

Powerful Poetry – An exploration of how poets use language to provoke the strongest emotions. 

Powerful Voices – An introduction to the art of persuasive rhetoric examining some of the most famous persuasive speeches. 

Romeo and Juliet – Shakespeare’s classic tale of love gone wrong… 

Year 9 – The World of English 

Students complete their Key Stage Three journey with a tour of significant and acclaimed world literature including the topics below: 

Of Mice and Men – John Steinbeck’s story of an unusual friendship set in the 1930s Dust Bowl of America. 

Gothic Horror – A series of the creepiest stories from the gothic genre. 

People and Perspectives – An exploration of travel writing from around the world 

War Poetry – Pupils will delve into the poetry influenced by war in the 19th and 20th centuries 

Shakespearian Speeches – The most famous speeches from Shakespeare’s most incredible stories.
